Fatigue? Depression? Sinus and Migraine Headaches? – It May be “Hidden” Allergies

On 04.21.10, In Diet & Nutrition, Holistic Health, By Liz.-By Dr. Craig Burns, A BioVeda Health and Wellness Center in East Centennial, CO

People with allergies know that the sniffling and the sneezing is “part of the deal” when it comes to having allergies. But, what many people with symptoms like sinus and migraine headaches, fatigue, depression, skin and digestive issues don’t know is that they might have allergies too! And, the allergic reaction may actually be the root cause of their condition, which is why treatment methods in the past have failed to produce great results.

Although not everyone agrees that conditions like Chronic Fatigue, IBS, and migraine headaches have any connection to allergies, it is true in many cases. New research is pointing to the idea that allergic reactions or chemical hypersensitivities may be at the root of these and other common conditions.

CFS and Fatigue Issues

Leo Galland, MD, director of the Foundation for Integrated Medicine in New York City and author of “Power Healing” point out that people with CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and similar conditions exhibit an over reactive immune system. “I believe that being an allergic individual predisposes you to chronic fatigue syndrome,” says Galland. “Chronic fatigue syndrome seems to be associated with an over-reactivity of certain parts of the immune system, which is similar to what we see in people with allergies.” He goes on further to say, “Mold allergy is an important cause of fatigue and muscle aches. A significant proportion of people with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia have mold sensitivity.”

So, if allergies are in fact part of the cause of CFS, then wouldn’t it make sense to make it part of the cure as well? Should you run out to the pharmacy and stock up on allergy medication to cure your fatigue problem? No! Instead, someone with CFS and similar fatigue issues would be wise to consult with a BioVeda Health and Wellness practitioner. These health experts are widely versed and well trained in the detection of “hidden” allergies and always take a more holistic, more cause focused approach to eliminating the symptoms and strengthening the body.

Depression and Mood Issues

Scientists are now discovering that mood and behavior is closely linked to the presence of allergies, even the difficult to detect “hidden” allergies. Again, chemical hypersensitivities cause stress on the main frame computer in the body, the nervous system. When this system is stressed out and under performing any number of symptoms can arise. And worse yet, many doctors do not give credit to this cause and effect relationship, which therefore leads to misdiagnosis and overuse of prescription and over the counter medications to manage the “in-curable” symptoms.

Many doctors are behind the times. There is a good deal of evidence pointing to direct biochemical processes connecting hypersensitivities, aka allergies with mood and behavior problems like depression, ADD, ADHD, etc. Even recently posted articles are saying that the only thing to do is treat the depression with antidepressants and the allergies with shots or antihistamines. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Again, someone with mood and behavior issues would be wise to consult with a BioVeda Health and Wellness practitioner. These health experts will first look for any “hidden” allergies before suggesting medications. And, they always take a more holistic, more cause focused approach.

Sinus and Migraine Headaches

There is definitely a connection between sinus and migraine headaches according to Dennis Gersten, MD, who practices psychiatry and nutritional medicine in Solana Beach, CA, and is the author of “Are You Getting Enlightened or Losing Your Mind?” Unlike tension headaches, which are usually due to other non-allergy related forms of stress, sinus and migraine headaches often times have a chemical trigger, aka allergic response.

When you breathe in an allergen it can trigger a reaction, says Harold Nelson, MD, senior staff physician at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver. Researchers believe that certain cells in the immune system can become hypersensitive and when triggered will cause the release of chemicals that cause swelling of blood vessels, which in turn can trigger the headache.

The western medical approach is to suppress the immune system response or to medicate the symptom. On the other hand, a BioVeda Health and Wellness practitioner would focus on correcting the abnormal immune response at the root level. Instead of suppressing the body, they would focus on eliminating the weakness and ultimately strengthen the body. In the end, if the cause is never addressed the patient will never get better. And, we all know how that story ends.

What Does All This Mean?

When the immune system and other parts of the central nervous system are overridden by chemical stressors in the environment they have a tendency to over react on a frequent basis. This over reaction is better known as a symptom. And, these symptoms are not limited to just runny noses, coughing or sneezing.

It would appear that “hidden” allergy problems and conditions like CFS, Depression, Sinus and Migraine Headaches are more related than we think. In fact, some researchers say that even more symptoms are caused by “hidden” chemical sensitivities like IBS and digestive issues as well as various skin conditions.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Like with most things in life there is a choice to be made. We can continue suppressing the body, medicating and neglecting the root cause of symptoms and condition or we can do something different. We can focus on the cause of the condition and proceed accordingly. This is way of thinking is certainly more natural and holistic. After all, how many people out there need to be misdiagnosed and mistreated before we realize that working with the body is always better than working against it?

Instead of ignoring the problem, medicating the symptom, or practicing avoidance… spread the word… there is a way to detect these “hidden” allergies and chemical sensitivities. With a new understanding combined with new technology, patients can be more optimistic than ever before.

Why do I need to take supplements?

Q: Why do I need to take whole food supplements? Can't I just eat the right foods to get the needed nutrients for healing?

A: The problem is that it is virtually impossible to consume and assimilate in one day an adequate amount of the proper foods to both take care of the body's nutritional needs for today and have enough left over to pay back nutritional debts, thus allowing for healing. This is because the body's number one priority with any nutrition coming in each day is to use it to take care of today's needs. Paying back debts and healing is done with any nutrition that may be left over at the end of the day.

Most people, especially as they begin to change to better eating, will suffer from an assimilation problem ~ due to past dietary sins; thus even if they do eat well, and most aren't perfect, there is not 100% assimilation of the food. [Note: One of the benefits and goals of consuming whole food supplements is to improve the assimilation factor, but it takes time.]

The quality of the fresh fruits and vegetables, even the organically grown, is sadly lacking in nutritional content due to the depletion of the soil's health. This is a fact, not opinion.

It has been our experience that those who do not take the supplements do initially feel better simply for improving their dietary intake, but their level of improvement begins to quickly plateau. This compared to those who take the supplements, providing they are changing their lifestyle at the same time, will have a steady improvement back to health, eventually being able to reduce dramatically or discontinue the supplements recommended.

Autism Rates: Government Studies Find 1 in 100 Children Has Autism Disorders

CHICAGO — Two new government studies indicate about 1 in 100 children have autism disorders – higher than a previous U.S. estimate of 1 in 150.

Greater awareness, broader definitions and spotting autism in younger children may explain some of the increase, federal health officials said.

"The concern here is that buried in these numbers is a true increase," said Dr. Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health. "We're going to have to think very hard about what we're going to do for the 1 in 100."

Figuring out how many children have autism is extremely difficult because diagnosis is based on a child's behavior, said Dr. Susan E. Levy of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics subcommittee on autism.

"With diabetes you can get a blood test," said Levy. "As of yet, there's no consistent biologic marker we can use to make the diagnosis of autism."

The new estimate would mean about 673,000 American children have autism. Previous estimates put the number at about 560,000.

One of the studies stems from the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health. The results were released Monday, and published in October's Pediatrics.

In that study, based on telephone surveys, parents reported about 1 in 91 children, ages 3 to 17, had autism, including milder forms such as Asperger's syndrome.

The other government estimate has not been formally released yet. But because of the new published findings, officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention decided to announce Friday during an embargoed press briefing that their preliminary findings also show about 1 in 100 children have the disorders.

Dr Aaron's Comments

In the 1980s the rate of autism was 1 in 10,000. Now just 20 years later we are at a rate of 1 in 91. The numbers are even higher when you look at boys alone. Many people have felt that it was the mercury in vaccines that have been the cause. Since taking the mercury out of most childhood vaccines the rate has continued to increase. While mercury could and probably has played a part we can see that there are other factors at play. More and more research is coming out showing that chemicals in our environment are the cause., especially inutero exposure to everyday chemicals. Another area of potential exposure is still vaccines. Either from the chemicals still be added or from the actual viruses found in the vaccine. On May 18th we will be having a seminar on vaccines to help people become more informed. Look for more details to come on this very informative seminar.

Food, Inc.

Have you seen Food, Inc. yet? What if you woke up one day and realized what you thought was food was, in actuality, harming you?

Like many of us, it’s easy to get caught up in a good sale on anything...but when you realize the true cost of the "savings", you may strive after more nourishing options.

If you haven't had the opportunity to see this eye-opening documentary, now is the perfect time!

Food, Inc. has been in the theaters and recently aired on tv. If you missed it when aired on PBS, you can catch it right now online at the following link:

As described on the website for Food, Inc., it "lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults."

Alfalfa ~ Super Food?

The Perfect Simplicity of Alfalfa for Patient Nutrition

Alfalfa is an interesting plant food. It was originally known as the staple food for breeding the fastest horses on earth. Then it was discovered to have amazing effects on the human body as well — as a source of energy and for its alkaline minerals, flavonoids, carotenoids and chlorophyll. Over the millennia, migrating tribes carried alfalfa with them. It's both an ancient food and modern-day super food, which is why it's a headliner inGreen Nutrients.

Alfalfa is a nutrient-dense food, containing vitamins A, C, K, folate, and choline. Its minerals are calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium, with traces of zinc, iron, copper, manganese and selenium. It also contains three percent protein, which is very high.

University of Michigan Health System researchers report, "While the medicinal benefits of alfalfa are poorly understood, the constituents in alfalfa have been extensively studied. The leaves contain approximately 2-3% saponins. Animal studies suggest that these constituents block absorption of cholesterol and prevent the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. One small human trial found that 120 grams per day of heat-treated alfalfa seeds for eight weeks led to a modest reduction in cholesterol."

There are several other nutrient-dense green plant foods in Green Nutrients as well. These add more valuable vitamins and minerals to the mix. If your patient is not eating vegetables at every meal (which is typical) or suffering from any acidic condition (arthritis, respiratory illness, colds and flu, gout, skin conditions, etc.), Green Nutrients is the first choice for your supplemental protocol.

Wrist and shoulder pain

Wrist pain can cause horrible shoulder pain. Your body will try to compensate for the pain by putting more pressure on the shoulders drawing them forward and then causing further pain in your mid/upper back. Try this:
Take your hands off your keyboard! Sit back in your chair, get nice and tall in your spine. Chin slightly lifted. Lift your wrists to shoulder level, rolling your wrists in one direction for about 10 seconds and then other.
Let your hands fall down to your sides and lift your shoulders toward your ears...roll them back and down. Repeat this 3-5x then on your last time, keep them back and down.
Lastly, while still keeping your hands by your side, your shoulders back and down:
Roll your left ear to your left shoulder...then down toward your chin working your oppostie ear to the other shoulder...then let your head roll back and bring it back up. Repeat that roll in one direction 3-5x. Then repeat the other direction 3-5x.
Do this routine multiple times per day. While on the computer, at a stop light (not while driving!), cooking, or anytime you need a little pick me up! Enjoy

How Thoughts Affect our Health

Underneath every problem or issue is a set of beliefs. The beliefs can include many elements such as:

  • How you think of yourself
  • How you perceive your place in the world
  • How you believe you must react to external events
  • How you are expected to react to external events
  • What you can expect from other people, from life or from the world
  • The way the world works
  • How the world reacts to you

Beliefs can be complex. For example, the belief “I am not capable can be combined with “If I try to do something, I am bound to fail, or “No matter what I do, people think I am stupid.” So beliefs can contain expected actions and reactions. The underlying belief system in each problem essentially says to your brain, “You will validate this belief by creating certain experiences for me.” Whenever a triggering situation occurs, either internally or externally, your faithful servant immediately recreates the problem, i.e. the uncomfortable feelings of personal limitation. (BSFF)

Each spinal nerve has a receptor located in the skin and nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments, organs and other tissues are connected to that spinal nerve. They develop together in embryo and grow from the spinal cord to the tissues. IN other words, signals from all these areas pass through neurons on their way back to the spinal cord and into the brain for processing.

(Enzymes, Loomis p. 43)

There is scientific documents proving that 87% of all diseases is a result of toxic thoughts. What we think effects us mentally, emotionally and physically – our entire system is effected by the thoughts we think.

Thoughts create Emotions create Attitudes create Behavior

When we experience & learn from any of the 5 senses the brain fires Electrical Impulses and we grow Dendrites (branches) on the axons. Everything we experience from the womb is stored in the brain and these memories are anchored and bolted in the brain. Once an experience has been felt, the hypothalamus responds chemically to whatever you experience electro magnetically, chemically and electrically. All chemicals carry feeling and they move into the cells.

These are key elements to be addressed in everyone's health to enable the body to balance and heal. Talk to a practitioner at Valeo as questions come to mind!

Take care of your Adrenals and they will take care of you!!!

An awesome article I found written
by Li Zheng, PhD, Lic. Acu.

Coincident with the balance theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine, many studies have demonstrated that acupuncture treatments contribute to the maintenance of the balance of biological chemicals such as serotonin, endorphin, dopamine, cortisol, and many other hormones in the central nervous system. Endocrine glands secrete hormones directly into the lymph and the bloodstream. The quick alleviation of symptoms of various diseases by acupuncture is partially fulfilled via the simultaneous improvement of the functions of endocrine glands, such as adrenal glands.

How can acupuncture increase cortisone level in one condition and reduce the same hormone in another? This happens because acupuncture can generally balance thyroid, adrenal gland, and other gland functions so that the levels of the different hormones are optimized. When inflammation continues, our bodies need more cortisol. Acupuncture stimulates the adrenal gland to produce more by enhancing its function instead of exhausting it as caffeine does. When our bodies produce too much cortisol to cope with stress, acupuncture reduces cortisol production by eliminating the stress factor and enhancing liver and kidney function to quickly discharge the extra stress hormones.

Acupuncture adjusts the adrenal gland function to produce the optimized amount of adrenaline in order to dilate the trachea and increase heart rate when our body is physically challenged.

Dr. Omura, conducted a lot of research to determine how the adrenal gland correlates with the Chinese meridian systems. He found that the Pericardium meridian, running along the midline of the ventral part of the arm and the chest area, is closely associated with adrenal gland function, and that the Triple Burner meridian, running along the midline of the dorsal part of the arm, shoulder and head area, is associated with ovary or adrenal gland function in the female and with testes or adrenal gland function in the male.

Healthy Coffee Replacement?

Coffee dependency in our country is an understatement. How is it that something woven into our culture and daily routine could be so detrimental to our health? Many of us turn our eyes from the reports on what coffee can do to our bodies simply because changing seems scary. Thankfully, there is a beverage that exists that not only tastes like coffee, but also offers true nourishment to your body. Welcome To Allergy Season!

“Your child has allergies.” A statement that no parent wants to hear but more and more parents are being told this. Allergies have become rampant in the United States. According to the Annual U.S. Prevalence Statistics for Chronic Diseases one in every four Americans suffers from Asthma and allergies. That is around 75 million Americans.
There are many theories and explanations to the increase of asthma and allergies; from Hygeine theory to vaccinations to the increased chemicals we are exposed to. Unfortunately, none of the theories have been able to explain all the causes. What this tells us is there is probably a bit of truth to all these theories.
Of course the best way to take care of it is through prevention but what do you do for someone who already suffers from these problems. Currently we approach allergies in one of three ways.

The first way is to find out what the person is allergic or sensitive to and then avoid it. The way we typically test for this is either a scratch test on the skin or a blood test to see if the person has formed antibodies to a substance. If you have ever gone through some of this testing, you know that it is not very fun and many substances a person may be allergic to may not show to be positive.

The second way we deal with it is to treat the symptoms, typically with medicine. This comes with a cost financially but also health wise. Medications have side effects which range from drowsiness, to increased appetite, to depression and anxiety to infertility.

The third way we typically deal with allergies is by helping the body be as healthy as possible so the effects are minimal. This can include avoiding pro-inflammatory foods, normalizing our immune system through chiropractic adjustments and nutrition, and getting proper rest.

But what if you could just eliminate them altogther. How can you do this? Just watch this 7 minute video to learn how. If after watching this video, you would like to learn more, then sign up for our seminar on Thursday April 15th, 2010.

Got Allergies?

For those of you dealing with seasonal allergies, you are more than painfully aware of the pollens in the air with this “early” Spring. Many automatically grab their over-the-counter pills to help ward off the seasonal symptoms.

How would you respond if you found out that there is an all natural food-based supplement that can help address the root issue of allergies so you don’t have to follow an annual over-the-counter routine?

The natural supplement I’m writing about is called Allerplex and also happens to be Valeo’s product-of-the-month.

Allerplex builds up your immune system and goes to work in your sinuses and lungs. Since exposure to all types of trees, grasses, and pollen can mean a long season of torture for many, why not try a product that will provide your body with real nutrients to build you up rather than masking the symptoms?

Allerplex comes in 40 capsule or 150 capsule bottles.
